Antonio Serna, M.D.
Gastroenterologist
About Antonio Serna, M.D.
Antonio Serna IV, M.D. can pinpoint the exact moment he knew he wanted to be a doctor, “I was in high school and shadowed a physician for career day. We were helping people and I enjoyed the experience. That day, I knew that this is what I wanted to do.”
Dr. Serna then went on to pursue his dream, completing his Medical Doctorate at the University of Texas Southwestern School of Medicine, as well as his Fellowship in Gastroenterology at the University of New Mexico Health Science Center. After that, he chose the sub-specialty of gastroenterology due to the diversity of the field. He says, “GI involves so many organs and organ systems. The work is interesting and diverse – we problem solve and do procedures.”
When Dr. Serna is not practicing medicine, he is involved in the local community, such as dedicating time as a volunteer at camps for children suffering for Crohn’s and colitis. Dr. Serna has been heavily involved in campaigns in order to promote colon cancer awareness and prevention. In addition to these efforts, his involvement has even extended to features on local television programming.
Dr. Serna’s motivation comes from his patients. They are what makes practicing medicine so enjoyable. In his own words, “The patients have to come first. When we put our patients first, we make a real difference, even when we can’t offer a cure.”
