Douglas Mills, D.O.

Gastroenterologist

About Douglas Mills, D.O.

Why did you choose to specialize in Gastroenterology?

Gastrointestinal symptoms can be some of the most personal complaints patients can have. While two patients may have the same diagnosis, the symptoms may affect each person’s life very differently. This specialty allows me to develop a relationship with each patient and to create a treatment plan that is specific for that person.

Do you have a specialty of interest within GI?

I enjoy treating a wide variety of conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease, liver disorders, disorders of the stomach, and functional bowel disease.  I am particularly interested in quality in endoscopy and colorectal cancer screening, because as our quality improves, so do our patient outcomes.

Where did you study?

After high school in Fort Worth, I went to Washington University in St. Louis, where I majored in history. I then went to medical school at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Midwestern University, and remained in the Chicago area for my training.  I completed my residency, followed by my Gastroenterology Fellowship at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, in Park Ridge, IL.

What certifications do you hold?

Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology

What do you and your family enjoy doing in your spare time?

I enjoy going to the zoo and museums with my wife and two children. We love traveling around the country. My kids help me garden, and we especially like growing tomatoes.

Do you have any special honors or recognition in your medical career that you would like to share?

I have published research related to quality in endoscopy. During my last year in residency, I was awarded the senior resident teaching award by my peers.
