Dr. William Stassen, a gastroenterologist with Austin Gastro, talks about conditions of the digestive tract called Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis. Diverticulosis is a very common conditions that affects approximately 80% of adults as they age, and occurs when small, bulging pouches develop in your digestive tract, most commonly in the colon. When one or more of these pouches become inflamed or infected, the condition is called diverticulitis. Symptoms include diarrhea, cramping and abdominal pain. If left untreated, diverticulitis can lead to potentially fatal infections and other serious health complications that require surgery.
