Dr. John Ziebrt of Austin Gastroenterology visited Studio 512 to talk about how to stay healthy while traveling abroad this summer. The best strategy to protect your gut health is to be proactive and focus on prevention. Take precaution with food and water in countries with limited resources. Avoid tap water, ice, mixed drinks. Use bottled water for brushing your teeth, and avoid things like salsa or fruit that can be left on tables. Hand sanitizer is always a good idea. If you do become ill during your trip, most symptoms will resolve themselves withing 3 to 5 days without needing to see a doctor. However, if you have high fever, severe abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, or symptoms lasting longer than 5 days you should absolutely seek medical treatment.
