Gastroenterologist
About Eric Gou, M.D.
Why Gastroenterology?
In the summer after my junior year in college, I joined the Hopkins 4k for Cancer, a non-profit organization dedicated to spreading cancer awareness in communities across the country during a 4,000-mile, two-month biking journey from Baltimore to San Francisco. During the trip, our group shared stories of the strength and courage of cancer patients from other communities to promote cancer awareness and foster hope in those also fighting the battle against cancer. As a gastroenterologist, my ability to screen for and prevent various forms of gastrointestinal cancers while continuing to advocate for cancer awareness is extremely rewarding!
What Can Patients Expect?
During the initial visit with my patients, I listen to their concerns and any details about their symptoms to better understand their GI history and pick up clues on potential disease processes. I discuss my recommendations for further workup of their symptoms, my rationale for those tests/procedures, and offer plenty of opportunities to answer any questions my patients may have, as I believe a shared decision-making process is important in patient care.
Do you have a specialty of interest within GI?
While I treat a wide range of gastrointestinal issues, I am particularly interested in colon cancer screening, inflammatory bowel diseases (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease), gastroesophageal reflux disease, and various liver diseases.
Where did you study?
I graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a double major in Biology and Psychology. I received my medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. I completed my residency training in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, where I continued as Assistant Professor alongside my wife and fellow Gastroenterologist, Dr. Thanh-Truc Le.
What do you and your family enjoy doing in your spare time?
In our spare time, Dr. Le and I enjoy spending time with family and friends, nature hikes with our puppy, Bolt, and finding the next epic travel destination!
