Screening Colonoscopy – Is considered a preventative measure and is typically covered 100% by insurance for anyone age 45 + with no history of colon polyps, gastrointestinal disease, and/or cancer. When no incidence of cancer, disease or polyps are identified during a screening colonoscopy, patients are typically recommended for a follow-up in 5-10 years.
Diagnostic Colonoscopy – Is typically a follow-up procedure, performed when past and/or present gastrointestinal symptoms, polyps, anemias, or gastrointestinal disease are present. The patient’s history and previous colonoscopy findings determine this type of colonoscopy.
Surveillance Colonoscopy – A surveillance colonoscopy is performed to determine any changes in the colon after a diagnosis of colon cancer or removal of polyps to ensure the health of the colon and determine if any new or previously diagnosed/removed indicators of cancerous/diseased tissues have returned.
While most screening colonoscopies are covered 100% by insurance, coverage for a follow-up procedure will vary by carrier. Our offices will verify coverage prior to the procedure being scheduled and typically will provide an estimate for the procedure costs prior to scheduling. We are happy to discuss available payment options/plans to help ensure that any associated costs are not a deterrent to receiving the care or treatment needed.
