Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF®)

What is transoral incisionless fundoplication (TIF)?

Transoral incisionless fundoplication, or the TIF procedure, is a minimally invasive treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Fundoplication is a surgical procedure where the lining of the upper stomach (fundus) and esophagus are manipulated to restore normal function to the gastroesophageal junction (the connection point between the esophagus and stomach). The TIF procedure does not involve any incisions or metal implants and may carry a short recovery time. For more information on this advanced treatment option, please contact GI Alliance to connect with a TIF-trained physician.

When is transoral incisionless fundoplication recommended?

Acid reflux (or heartburn) is a common, and often uncomfortable, symptom of GERD. The primary goal is of the transoral incisionless fundoplication procedure is to help reduce the frequency of acid reflux (or other symptoms) experienced by the patient. TIF may be recommended for those who:

  • Experience chronic heartburn, acid regurgitation, or other GERD symptoms
  • Have GERD symptoms that are resistant to medication, diet, and lifestyle changes
  • Do not have hiatal hernias or who have hiatal hernias no larger than 1-inch in diameter
  • Prefer to avoid any potential long-term impact of medication therapy

During a consultation, a GI Alliance gastroenterologist can review your symptoms and treatment options, and help you determine if the TIF procedure is an ideal solution for you.

How is transoral incisionless fundoplication performed?

Transoral incisionless fundoplication is performed under anesthesia to help ensure your comfort. The procedure is accomplished using an endoscope paired with the TIF device that carries out the fundoplication process. The endoscope is passed through the TIF device and inserted into the esophagus via the mouth. Using the TIF device, the physician wraps the end of the esophagus down around the top portion of the stomach and then securely attaches the tissue in place.

Is transoral incisionless fundoplication safe?

There are some risks and side effects associated with transoral incisionless fundoplication. Common effects of the procedure include a sore throat, hoarseness, temporary difficulty with swallowing, a reaction to anesthesia, and nausea. While some of the discomfort-related aftereffects of the procedure are generally common, they usually resolve on their own shortly after surgery. Risk factors associated with the procedure include being under the age of 18, being overweight, and having a large hiatal hernia.

It is important to speak with your doctor about any concerns you may have regarding your potential risks and this procedure.
